Instrumentation

Observing it's Physical Characteristics
IE
(1) How many instruments are there
&
(2) What are they

***** Can we HEAR this as a listening exercise ?  (without actually seeing a visual of the ensemble ?) ********
What effect do the physical characteristics have on the Feel/Vibe/Energy/Genre/Use ??
(The best way to do this is to re-arrange the instrumentation of an existing song and make some observations directly)

*****Up until this point all of these observations are OBJECTIVE -  IE Not influenced by your personal feeling or taste -  We are making CONCRETE / PHYSICAL observations*******

What effect do the physical characteristics have on your taste / judgement / feeling toward the song ?

****(Ultimately , The subjective part is more important, because that is how you explain / justify your objective answer)****

Genre

*****
Songs classified in a certain category because of Shared tradition or set of conventions
Shared traditions  / set of conventions = Rules / Characteristics
******

Instrumentation is one of the main defining factors (rule/characteristic) when deciding on Genre
(Remember : We do this automatically without really thinking)

???  What are some of the other main factors when putting a song in a certain Genre ???
1.Instrumentation
2._______________
3._______________
4._______________

Homework : What Are Your Stereotypes ?

For each of the popular music genres,  go through and tell me 10 things that fall on your list of what a song must have to be considered part of that particular genre. I.E.  What characteristics would your stereotypical country song have ? These should be concrete characteristics that you can point to either visually or aurally and say "Because I can hear _____________ , I know this song belongs to the _______________ Genre"

Genres :
1. Rock
2. Pop
3. Hip Hop
4. Country
5. Jazz

Here are the four genres for which you will come up with stereotypes.  I have put links for the billboard top charts in each genre respectively  -  you should listen to the top songs in each genre and see what they all have in common ? These shared characteristics are actually  a 'shared set of conventions' that will make up your stereotype.

****One wrinkle to this is that we may all have our own personal checklist that is different from the common stereotype - that's ok ! Include those in your list *****
