Class 4/16

Compare these two examples
What is the Music doing for the video ?
Why is it there ?
How is it improving the audeince's experience?

Original
No Sound
When we Take things in visually -  We are constantly having REACTIONS

Reaction =
an action performed or a feeling experienced in response to a situation or event.

Take a look at these pictures and observe what kind of reaction you have

Picture
Picture
Reactions....

In just a split second, we can look at these pictures and say to ourselves "They look sad" or "That's Sad" or "I wonder why they are crying"

Picture
Picture
Again -  If I said "what is your reaction to this ?"  , Your response would probably be " they look angry/mad !"

Easy to see right ?

^^^THIS RIGHT HERE IS US INTERPRETING EMOTION FROM THE PICTURE^^^^
(AKA a Reaction)

It's not the same thing as Feeling Emotion ourselves - but Recognizing an emotion someone else might be feeling

We (as humans) are really good at doing this when visual cues are involved !

We learn and are conditioned from a very young age to be able to do this, it's not necessarily something we are ever 'taught' , we just learn it naturally to recognize the emotions on peoples faces , we don't have a thought process "oh he's yelling and pointing and his face is screwed up , he must be angry"  - We just see the face and know ANGER

<<<NEXT LEVEL>>>

We don't even stop there though - we don't just think "he angry" and not think anymore - we might think
"Why did that make him/her angry? what happened to them right before this photo ?
Or
" I wonder who they are so mad at ? Who is he yelling at ?"
Or
" Yikes I know that face !! That's the face my wife makes at me when she is super pissed ! "

Not only do we react by interpreting the emotion , we have a deeper reaction when we try to figure it out, or relate to it.

The whole deal with what we have been talking about, is that we can do this from music , too

I'LL PROVE IT

What if we choose some music to accompany those same photos

Here's two examples.

Question :  Which one is more appropriate to accompany the photos?

Song 1
Song 2
Which is more appropriate to accompany the photos  ?
Picture
Picture
The music Projects emotions that are also reflected in the picture

OR

We get *Aural Cues to match up with the *Visual Cues

We see this ALL THE TIME in Television,  Commercials,  Movies ETC.

Same Exercise Here .... Which song matches the pictures best ?

Song 1
Song 2
Picture
Picture
? See how easy this is with the visual cues ?

Our brain automatically reacts to these songs, and labels it with an emotion or a meaning , without us really even thinking about it

- JUST LIKE WITH THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS -
We don't have to think or analyze too hard  - it is subconscious and instantaneous !

****ONE BIG GOAL WE HAVE IN HERE IS TO UNLOCK THAT SUBCONSCIOUS JUDGEMENT, AND MAKE IT A LITTLE LESS INSTANTANEOUS*****

-We really want to analyze and try to figure out what we are looking for to make these interpretations

- In the case of the facial expression pictures, you could describe 4 things in these pictures that lets you know how to interpret the emotion from it

WHAT ABOUT FOR MUSIC ? CAN YOU ANALYZE YOUR OWN THOUGHT PROCESS ON HOW YOU REACT TO MUSIC ?

Do these work as well as the original ? Why or Why Not ?

Mozart Rocky
Techno Rocky

Al Jerreau Rocky

The Most important thing is that the MUSIC represents the same EMOTIONS as the Video

--BUT--

HOW DO WE INTERPRET EMOTION FROM MUSIC ?

Soundtrack Project :

Description :
Your Job is to add a new sound track to a movie.  You will find your own video to set music to.  You are going to submit 2 soundtrack options: One that you think works with the emotions , and one that you think Doesn't work.

YOU WILL SUBMIT A WRITTEN PORTION, AND A VIDEO PORTION.

WRITTEN PORTION :
Part 1:  Movie Scene background
  • This is where you are telling me about the emotions that you interpreting for your video (i.e. the emotions that should be reflected by your music)
  • give a little back ground of the scene and where it is in the movie.  tell me what you are seeing in the movie that makes you feel the emotions/vibe you are picking up.
Part 2:  Why your Bad Soundtrack doesn't work
  • Tell us what emotions you are feeling from the music you selected as a bad example. what is in the music that makes you feel the emotions/vibes that don't match up with your movie scene
Part 3:  Why your Good Sound track works
  • what emotions do you get from the Good song that makes you think it matches up with your movie scene? What are you hearing musically that makes you think that ?
For the written portion, remember to talk about as many musical examples as possible !!

VIDEO PORTION:
To save your video -
  • FILE / MOVIE / EXPORT AUDIO TO MOVIE

Send me the video clip with the new music .

Skills Used for the Project:

  • Converting youtube to MP3 / MP4 files
  • Importing Files into Garageband
  • Selecting appropriate music choices
  • Mixing Automation Volume (loud for climax, fade out, etc)
  • Splitting track to start / stop at appropriate times

Steps:

1.  First  Select your video.  Remember selection is important ! Pick a scene that has very obvious emotions present the you will be able to match easily, or easily contradict !! Don't choose an ambiguous scene .

2 .  The next thing we need to do is get our Video into GarageBand.  This will use the same process as importing and MP3 !!
  • go to    www.ytmp3.cc
  • FIRST :  SELECT THE MP4 option -  This is for converting a whole video , not just the audio.
  • Copy and Paste URL into the Convert spot.
  • Convert , Download , and Drag into GB just like we have with other files
Next , we have to get rid of the existing soundtrack
  • There are a couple options here, but lets do the easiest and delete the existing soundtrack completely.
  • Select the old soundtrack track, and delete the entire thing.  Then you will ad a new track for your new music.

 3.  Select your music.  Remember you want to pick music not necessarily  that is your favorite music, but selections that are very obvious in the emotion they represent, and the you can easily write and talk about .

4.  Convert and Import your track to the video , and trim to the length you want.  YOUR MUSIC MUST FINISH WITH YOUR VIDEO, SO TRIM / FADE OUT.  Feel free to set the automation if you want the music to come down or up at any point .
