We can think of this in terms of language:

4 Random Sentences Sentences:

1. In music, sampling is the reuse of a portion or sample of a sound recording in another recording.

2. With advancing technology and the development of new digital musical techniques, it has become even easier for an artist to

3. The domestic dog is a member of the genus Canis, which forms part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore.

4. Freedom, generally, is having the ability to act or change without constraint. Something is "free" if it can change easily and is not constrained in its present state

Copy and pasting parts of each of those sentence, I can make an entirely new sentence

New Sentence: In music, With advancing technology and the development of new digital musical techniques, The domestic dog is not constrained in its present state.

Now we have an entirely new sentence, taken only from samples of other sentences.

Does it make sense ???  That is a whole other matter!!

We can do this with music Too !!

Here are 3 different songs

Mixed into 1 song

Picture
Once again, weather or not it makes sense is a whole other issue !!

Another way to use samples....

Original Song
New Song
What did they do ? What is the sample ? Can you describe it?
Picture
If we think of our language analogy :

Old sentence: The domestic dog a member of the genus Canis, which forms part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore.

New Sentence :  The domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog vThe domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog The domestic dog

Can you think of other songs that do this ?

Look at this List of Examples
**** This is different than a cover song******
With a cover, we actually have the same song, but in a different form.

If we take this back to our language analogy:

Old Sentence:

The domestic dog is a member of the genus Canis, which forms part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore.

New Sentence :

The domestic dog is a member of the genus Canis, which forms part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore.

See how we have the same sentence, but in a different form, whereas before , we had an actual new sentence sampled from other's

QUIZ
  1. What is a Sample / Sampling ?
  2. What is the difference between a Sample and a Cover Song ?
  3. Is it illegal to sample music ?
  4. Why do you think an Artist sample someone else's music ?
