Mixing Volume

Below is an example of how the finished project will look.  2 musical examples from different time periods (in the orange)  with dialogue placed and fitted in on top (in blue).

** However, as it is set now,  we would hear both the dialogue and the music at the same volume , and it would sound like a jumbled mush of sound. **
Picture
To Solve this problem, we need to mix our sound levels.  The Yellow line is the Volume Levels - to make this come up - we push "A" or go to the mix dropdown menu, and push "show animation" .

Notice how in the circled selection, when the dialogue (blue)  comes in , the music (orange) goes down in volume for the exact amount of time the dialogue plays.  This is to allow us to hear the dialogue.

**NOTICE:  the music volume doesn't go completely down - so that we can hear some music in the background.  Use your judgement to decide how loud the music should be so we can still hear the voice clearly,  but so its not empty and void of music. ****

****NOTICE:  The volume of music FADES down gradually bringing us into the music, not just once level right into another.  THE FADE IS REQUIRED*****

THIS PROJECT IS DUE 45 MINUTES FROM RIGHT NOW !!!!

Using Samples - Project

This is another "Imagine I am a studio executive and you are an artist / producer" situation.

The Scenario:
I have 5 songs that I know are super popular and want to re release somehow  -  but I need to put a new spin on them in order to release it again.  I'm not exactly sure what my new spin is, other than i will use one of the tunes at the base track, and put a sample from one of the other 5 tunes in there - then i can re-release it as a new song.

Your Job is to choose which track to use as the main song,  find a sample (short - less than 20 seconds) in one of the other songs, extract it from that song, and drop it into our main track.

Skills used for this assignment :
  • Importing MP3 tracks into GarageBand
  • Chopping/Splitting  the track to extract sample
  • Placing the sample in the right spot in the original track
  • Mixing Volume  (original track goes mute and sample goes loud

Steps for this Project are below :

Step 1 - Main Track Selection

Listen to the tracks - you must use on of the 5 options I gave you below !.  Decide which one will be your main song .  Download and Import this track into Garage Band , Make sure once you import it you slide it all the way to the left so it starts right at the beginning of the track.  **** Change your metronome marking to 101 *****
Step 2 - Sample Selection

Listen to the other tracks (You must use a sample from the tracks I gave you, & you cannot use a sample from your main track) .  You need to find a short ( less than 30 second , more than 10 second ) sample from one of the other tracks.  Take a listen and decide one a section from another song that you could work into your original song. Import the Song intro Garage Band.

**** YOU CANT USE MY EXACT SAMPLE / TRACK COMBO  *****

Step 3 - Splitting / Chopping Sample

Import the song you will steal from into garageband .  Locate the section of the song that contains your sample.  You will have to locate where the sample begins, and where it ends. Using the "split track" (command/e OR Edit Dropdown Menu/split track) function.  Using the split track function, split the track where your sample begins, and where it ends. You can give yourself a little lee way if you want to fad into the track.

Step 4 -  Track Placement

You will use 2 tracks , one for your original song, and one for your sample , Just like we have with Dialogue and music in past projects.   Fit your sample into your original tracks where you think it fits, or where you think is creative.  It is important that where it fits lines up with the rhythm, and we don't add / drop any beats.  Make sure our metronome is set to 101 and look at the marks up at the top of the screen.  YOU MUST FIT USE YOUR SAMPLE IN THE ORIGINAL TRACK AT LEAST 2 TIMES.

Step 5 - Mixing

now that your sample is placed where you want it above your original track, we have to mix the volume so they aren't both mixing each other up.  You should fade your original track into the sample somewhat gradually .  It is possible to have both tracks playing at the same time, but your sample should be plainly audible !!
