Class 5 : 10/2

Please remember this class will be done at home instead of an in person session !  LOTS OF REVIEW HERE -  For the rest of the classes it is imperative you are comfortable with terms / definition / concepts - PLEASE use review materials. There will be an assignment dealing with the video !

There is also an assignment dealing with song form ! Please bring to class next week on 10/9

So -  2 Assignments Due 10/9 -  (1)  Review Assignment, (2)  Song form Assignment

REVIEW :  Melody , Harmony , Rhythm

Below are 3 videos for you to watch, each dealing with Melody , harmony, and Rhythm respectively.  THERE IS GREAT INFO IN THESE DOCUMENTARIES !

FYI the guy that produces these (Howard Goodall) is British, and some of the examples and humor is a little cheesy ! Still Great info here.

ASSIGNMENT :
Review the materials we Covered for each of these topics.  Pick a few terms for each one and tell me what Howard Goodall says about them, and what examples he uses in the video .

Example :
Scales
Howard Goodall talks about scales and mentions a similar concept 'modes'.  He gives each note in the scale a number and picks them out of a bag to make a random Song.

Nothing tricky here ! Just use your answers to prove to me the you watched the video .

You should have 15 terms total !! (3 for each video, a bunch for one  etc. ) Whatever terms you want.

Melody

Rhythm

Harmony

Song Form

Take a look at the video below.  Remember , we hear songs as one large finished product, but like the Star Spangled Banner, or The Adele tune we listened to, they can be broken up in to smaller pieces.

Like in class, we are listening to changes in the music that signify these sections.  Changes like:  Lyrics, different words in lyrics, Different instrumentation ETC.  Check out how this video explains how changes in Instrumentation  / Texture (remember texture is related to instrumentation) often Mark a new section of the form / structure
Here's another one - again , a little cheese but 125000 views means she's doing something right !

Here she talks bout how Repetition can signify different sections.   Maybe the words and Notes of the melody are always the same (chorus), or maybe its the same background music and same notes in the melody, but different words (verse), or maybe its completely new material  (bridge).
Check out this example of the first song map I showed you all.   On the top line I have now labeled the sections of the song.

See how they often change with the instrumentation ?

Listen for Repetition.
Verse :  Same Music / Melody , BUT different Lyrics
Chorus :  Same Music / Melody , AND same lyrics every time
Bridge :  Different music / Melody,  Different lyrics (all new)

Assignment :   Pick a song map you did for an assignment before, and see if you can add the different sections!   Be prepared to share and explain in class.
