ETC.

**** We are not concerned with WHAT instruments are there, just the total number****
*** We are not concerned with the number of PEOPLE , but rather the number of INSTRUMENTS*****
One Variable when dealing with instrumentation is simply the amount or number of instruments that are involved in a particular song.

Picture some different musical settings and the vibe of the music we would be hearing :
  • a singer / song writer at a coffee shop (2 inst.)
  • a piano player playing solo in a cocktail lounge (1 inst.)
  • a rock band in an auditorium (5 + inst)
  • traditional catholic church ( organ / vocal )
  • modern gospel church ( 4+ )

Just by picturing the size of the instrumentation, we can kind of imagine what the vibe of the music would be.

The way different instrumentations interact depending the number of instruments is called Texture

Texture Listening

  • For the following Songs, listen, and keep track of any change in texture you hear.
  • A Change in texture is signified by :  Addition,  Subtraction, or Change in Timbre
  • For every time you hear a change in texture, record:    (1) a time stamp     (2) the number of timbres you hear    (3) What kind of Change in texture you heard   (4) If possible, name the timbres

Song Map Assignment

Assignment:
Create A 'Song Map' for a song of your choice, outlining any changes in texture you hear.

Requirements:
-Give a time stamp for every change in texture
- Label each timbre
-Label the reason for each change in texture ( Addition, Subtraction, or change of Timbre)

** One way to make this easier is to use a song in a video to give yourself a visual **
** This can be completed on a word processing program, or by hand - either way make sure it is neat! **
