Film Music

You Only need to watch the first minute and a half of this !!! Don't watch the entire thing ! Just the first bit .....
Now Skip to 0:20 to watch the same clip with the music taken out....

Compare these two examples
What is the Music doing for the video ?
Why is it there ?
How is it improving the audience's experience?

Original
No Sound

Important Question :  What are we hearing in the music that matches / supports  what we are Seeing on the screen ?

When we Take things in visually -  We are constantly having REACTIONS

Reaction =
an action performed or a feeling experienced in response to a situation or event.
The music Projects emotions that are also reflected in the picture

OR

We get *Aural Cues to match up with the *Visual Cues

We see this ALL THE TIME in Television,  Commercials,  Movies ETC.

Activity : Do these work as well as the original ? Why or Why Not ?

Instructions :
1. For each of the 8 videos, give an opinion of YES you think the music reflects what is happening in the film, or NO it doesn't work well with what is happening visually .  Give at least 3 reasons to prove each answer. These should be MUSICAL characteristics .

2.  Rank them From BEST to WORST judging on how well the MUSIC supports the VIDEO

Ricky Rocky
Mozart Rocky
Techno Rocky
Slick Ricky Rocky
Al Jerreau Rocky
Oasis Rocky
The Most important thing is that the MUSIC represents the same EMOTIONS as the Video

--BUT--

HOW DO WE INTERPRET EMOTION FROM MUSIC ?

Soundtrack Activity :

For this activity, You will have to find songs to add to a blank  movie scene.   You will (1) pick a movie scene (2)  Find songs that you Think work and songs that you think don't work , and provide and explanation to prove your answer.

Instructions :
  • Video Selection:  Select a video that you think would work well to change the music in.
    • Tip*** :  The best way for this to work is to find a clip from a movie that doesn't contain much sound other than the music  -  Look at this example  - See how there aren't sound effects and no dialogue ? This works well
  • Analyze The Original:  Why do you think the original music was used for the clip ? What do you think the film makers heard in the music that makes it match up with the clip ?
  • Soundtrack Selection:  You will pick a total of 4 songs - 2 That work well as a soundtrack, and 2 that don't  work well with your video selection !
  • Analyze / Explanation: Give a detailed explanation of WHY or WHY NOT as far as the song working with the movie clip.  Imagine you are a producer for the film, and you are trying to sell your ideas to the director.

**** If you want to run your  video selection by me , no problem ! Send it and I will give you my thoughts !
****This should take paragraph form and be at least 500 words !
