FINAL PROJECT:
Sampling "TED" Talk

IMPORTANT NOTE :

We will complete this project on class days May 7 and May 9 . We will do the computer / Technical part in class .

IT IS IMPERATIVE YOU ARE PREPARED WITH THE OTHER MATERIALS THAT ARE POSSIBLE TO BE DONE OUTSIDE OF CLASS - SO YOU CAN BE READY TO GO IN CLASS WORK TIME

THE FIRST AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS IS THE SONG AND SAMPLE SELECTION

The idea of this project is to do a version (smaller/shorter) of what Mark Ronson just did on his Ted Talk .  We will take an original song, find some songs where it is used as a sample, and talk about each one, specifically about how/why the new artists are using the old song.

We will be using Garage Band (program on these computers) to compile all 3 or our songs in one place, and record over those songs our scripted info about the sample.

SONG SELECTION

YOU NEED :

- AN ORIGINAL SONG

-  3 SONGS THAT USE A SAMPLE FROM THAT PARTICULAR SONG

**USE WHO SAMPLED TO HELP WITH THIS**

******YOU MUST EMAIL ME THIS AND GET APPROVAL BEFORE CLASS ON NEXT TUESDAY******

EXAMPLE

ORIGINAL SONG
SONG 1
SAMPLE OCCURS AT - 0:00

SONG 2
SAMPLE OCCURS AT - 2:05

SONG 3
SAMPLE OCCURS AT - 1:15

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE MAY 7 - YOU CAN CHECK OUT THE REST OF THE ASSIGNMENT BUT PROCEED AT OWN RISK !
Here's an example of the finished product......
The Steps :

Song Selection
  • Select and Original Song
  • Find 3 Songs that sample some part of your original

MP3 Conversion :
  • Convert Song into MP3 format using this site so it is in a format we can put into GB

Import Songs into GB
  • Drag and drop into 4 different tracks
  • Trim so that we don't have the entire song, but just the sample portion, and the portion you will talk over
  • Place in succession so they play one after the other

Write / Record Script
  • Write out 4 scripted blurbs about each song
  •  Record your 4 scripts exactly, in 4 different MP3 files
  • Import script files into garage band on a separate track right above the song it is describing
Tech Aspect :
  • Converting Songs to MP3 Using ytmp3.cc
  • Importing songs into Garageband
    • Trim to length so we can hear the sample
    • Put in Succession so they don't all play at same time
  • Record Script using phone
  • Import Scripts into Garageband
    • Trim to Length
    • Place in right spot so we can hear overtop of your song
    • Mix volume so we can hear script
Written Aspect :
  • Song Selection
  • Writing the script that will describe your sample / songs

Step 1 :

 Step 1 :
  1.  Choose Original Song
    • There are no restrictions, but Try to Pick a sample that is distinct / Obvious  and will be easy to pick out in other songs.
  2. Choose 3 Songs where the Sample Appears
    • The only restriction is that your sample must appear in the newer song. However, like above, try to find a song where your samples very obviously appears
  3. Convert Songs to MP3 Format
    • Follow instructions Given in Class
  4. Import  Song into Garage Band
    • Drag and Drop from "Downloads" File
  5. Spread songs apart so they play one after another
    • We want our songs to play in succession, not simultaneously.  Spread them apart so when one ends, the other begins.   Star with your original tune (1st), then your two examples that contain the sample (2nd and 3rd), then finish off with a little of your original tune with your conclusion (4th)
  6. Trim Songs To shorter Length
    • For each song, we only need enough time (1) Hear the sample appear and (2) say say our script about the particular piece.  Make sure you leave the sample itself, plus about a minute where your voice-over will be.

After Completing these 3 steps, your project should look similar to the screen shot below.
  • Notice how there is a track for my original tune or Sample ( I Got a Woman),  and then 3 other tracks for My Examples tunes where the sample appears (you will only have 2).
  • Also notice how I don't have the entire tune, just an excerpt.  For all my tunes, I left the sample at the beginning, so in the final product you will: hear the sample, then hear me talk about it, hear the sample, then hear me talk about it ETC.

Step 2:  Script Writing / Recording

  1. Write Script For each Tune
    • For  each of your tunes, write a short script.  In your script you must mention :   2 pieces of Background info about the piece, 2 pieces of Musical info about the piece, and 2 pieces of info about the sample itself.   You should try to look for connections between the two artists, or research a reason the new artist may have sampled the original song.
  2. Write a conclusion
    • After writing a script for your original , and the two examples, write  some concluding thoughts after hearing/researching your sample in different contexts.  Overall what did you think about the usage of your original tune ?  Do you approve ? would the original artist approve?
  3. Record your Scripts
    • The Best way to do this is to record as 4 different files :   Original Tune script, Example song #1 Script, Example Song #2 Script, and Conclusion Script.
    • By Far the easiest way to do this is to find a quiet spot and record with a voice recording app on your phone.  For iPhone users, there is a pre downloaded app called 'Voice Memo' .  Other phone types, there should be a free download.  The most important thing is that you can send your recordings to yourself in the form of and mp3/mp4 via email
    • The quality does not have to be perfect!! just make sure you get your 6 pieces of info for each tune on a recording that you can email to yourself.
Below are the separate recordings of my scripts.
  • Notice how there are separate files for each script.

Step 3:

  1. Import your script audio files into Garageband File
    • Email yourself the audio file of your script recordings.
    • After Accessing through your email, download the audio files onto your computer, and drag and drop them into your project the same way we did the song files.
  2. Fit in with Original song Tracks
    • Notice in the screen shot below , my script tracks are laid right above my original song track.  You can do this by dragging and dropping the track from the left.
    • Also notice how the script above the song track is smaller than the song track.  the means we will: (1) hear some of the song, (2) hear the script, (3) then hear  a little more of the song before we hear the next selection.  if your script is too long for you song, simply lengthen the song using the technique shown in class

FINAL STEP!
  • We must mix the volume so that when our script comes in , our song selection gets quiet so we can hear the words , then after we speak the song will get louder again.
