Sampling "TED" Talk
Here's an example of the finished product......
Step 1 / Day 1
Goals for Day 1 / Step 1 :
After Completing these 3 steps, your project should look similar to the screen shot below.
- Choose Sample
- There are no restrictions, but Try to Pick a sample that is distinct / Obvious and will be easy to pick out in other songs.
- Choose 2 Songs where the Sample Appears
- The only restriction is that your sample must appear in the newer song. However, like above, try to find a song where your samples very obviously appears
- Convert Songs to MP3 Format
- Follow instructions Given in Class
- Import Song into Garage Band
- Drag and Drop from "Downloads" File
- Spread songs apart so they play one after another
- We want our songs to play in succession, not simultaneously. Spread them apart so when one ends, the other begins. Star with your original tune (1st), then your two examples that contain the sample (2nd and 3rd), then finish off with a little of your original tune with your conclusion (4th)

- Trim Songs To shorter Length
- For each song, we only need enough time (1) Hear the sample appear and (2) say say our script about the particular piece. Make sure you leave the sample itself, plus about a minute where your voice-over will be.
After Completing these 3 steps, your project should look similar to the screen shot below.
- Notice how there is a track for my original tune or Sample ( I Got a Woman), and then 3 other tracks for My Examples tunes where the sample appears (you will only have 2).
- Also notice how I don't have the entire tune, just an excerpt. For all my tunes, I left the sample at the beginning, so in the final product you will: hear the sample, then hear me talk about it, hear the sample, then hear me talk about it ETC.
Step 2 - Script Writing / Recording
- Write Script For each Tune
- For each of your tunes, write a short script. In your script you must mention : 2 pieces of Background info about the piece, 2 pieces of Musical info about the piece, and 2 pieces of info about the sample itself. You should try to look for connections between the two artists, or research a reason the new artist may have sampled the original song.
- Write a conclusion
- After writing a script for your original , and the two examples, write some concluding thoughts after hearing/researching your sample in different contexts. Overall what did you think about the usage of your original tune ? Do you approve ? would the original artist approve?
- Record your Scripts
- The Best way to do this is to record as 4 different files : Original Tune script, Example song #1 Script, Example Song #2 Script, and Conclusion Script.
- By Far the easiest way to do this is to find a quiet spot and record with a voice recording app on your phone. For iPhone users, there is a pre downloaded app called 'Voice Memo' . Other phone types, there should be a free download. The most important thing is that you can send your recordings to yourself in the form of and mp3/mp4 via email
- The quality does not have to be perfect!! just make sure you get your 6 pieces of info for each tune on a recording that you can email to yourself.
- Notice how there are separate files for each script.
Part 3
- Import your script audio files into Garageband File
- Email yourself the audio file of your script recordings.
- After Accessing through your email, download the audio files onto your computer, and drag and drop them into your project the same way we did the song files.
- Fit in with Original song Tracks
- Notice in the screen shot below , my script tracks are laid right above my original song track. You can do this by dragging and dropping the track from the left.
- Also notice how the script above the song track is smaller than the song track. the means we will: (1) hear some of the song, (2) hear the script, (3) then hear a little more of the song before we hear the next selection. if your script is too long for you song, simply lengthen the song using the technique shown in class
FINAL STEP!
- We must mix the volume so that when our script comes in , our song selection gets quiet so we can hear the words , then after we speak the song will get louder again.
