Group Activity :  Do they Mean It

Assignment
Discuss authenticity of song/Artist based on their:   Musical Characteristics

                                                                                           Background

We will examine each song in 2 stages
first JUST LISTENING -  and making a judgement solely on what we hear
then RESEARCHING the artist/song background

1.  Listening
Answer: Does the Artist / Song SOUND Authentic?

-Why?
-What do you HEAR that makes you answer that way?

Give a Definitive answer and Prove it!!

You should have MULTIPLE things you are hearing that makes the artist sound Authentic or Artificial, enough to prove your point!

**** Remember -  to decide if they are "Authentic" in the message they are delivering, we must decide WHAT that message is !! Come to an agreement with your on about what the artist is trying to convey to you, the Listener******

2.  Research
Is the Artist / Song Authentic based of your research?

-  Why?
-  What did you find in the artist / song's background that made you answer that way?

Did your research support or disprove your answer from the listing?

See if you can find CONCRETE points in the song's / artist background that says  " Yes they are qualified to sing about that subject matter " or "no they cannot authentically sing about that "
Song List:

Marvin Gaye    "What's Goin On"
Justin Beiber     "Sorry"
Bruno Mars     "Uptown Funk"

*****Important*****
Be sure to do these in specific order (listen then research) .
The point is to first listen and force ourselves to make a decision solely based on what you are hearing MUSICALLY , and then see if the research supports our opinion, or if the artist was able to fool us

Have one sheet to hand in for the group with all songs and information

Concluding Questions:

1. Rank these 3 songs on Who was MOST Authentic/Sincere/Genuine.
It is possible that these artists are ALL Sincere, but to what degree?   Who do you believe most after doing your research?

2. Does Authenticity / Sincerity Matter to you when judging a song?
Does your ranking in 'authenticity' match up with how you would rank the song if you were just asked "what song was best?"
