Tuesday 3/7

PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT MUSIC APPRECIATION IS CANCELLED THIS THURSDAY 3/9

Objectives:

Repetition Activity
 Spring Break Analysis Activity

Assignments:

Spring Break Analysis Activity

Repetition - Group Activity

Instructions:

Listen to the Song List -  Listen for all aspects of the the song that are Repetitious.  This could be Lyrics, Things that instruments are playing - ETC.

Remember this example from Class where the piano is VERY Repetitious - The notes  - the Melody are also repetitious - however  , the Lyrics are not. Do your best to describe exactly WHAT about the piece is repetitive.

Question 1:  Does the amount of repetition have an impact on the overall quality of the song ?  IE - lots of repetition = 'Great song'?  Vice versa?

Question 2:  What do YOU like?  Is the music you listen to generally more toward the repetitive side of the spectrum? or no?
Song List:

Roxanne
ErlKonig
You Got Me
Lovely Day

Find:  One VERY REPETITIVE Song
Find:  One Non - REPETITIVE Song

NOTE: I will collect a sheet from everybody! Make sure you all record answer.

Spring Break Assignment

Using the judgment Criteria we have discussed thus far in semester, evaluate the songs on the song list, plus 2 of your own.

** Remember that the whole point is that this has nothing to do with your liking the song - whether you are partial to the song/style/artist is irrelevant!  We are trying to remove ourselves and make observations..****

**The biggest part of this assignment is not your evaluation - but the reasoning for giving that evaluation.  I.E. it is not acceptable to just say " There is a thin Texture" - Why is it thin? What makes it thin? What is missing that would  make it 'thick' ?**
Song List:
1.  Moonlight Sonata
2.  Can't Help It
3.  Hotel California
4.
Self Selection
Part 1:  Evaluating Musical Characteristics
1.  Melody   (Lyrics & Music/Notes)
Simple --- VS --- Complex
4.   Repetition
Repetitive --- VS. --- Non-Repetitive
2.  Texture
Thick --- VS --- Thin
3.  Harmony
Functional --- VS. ---- Non - Functional
Part 2:  Is it for Art , or $Commerce$
Art -------------  VS. ---------------- $$$$
*************Remember to give a "Why" for all the previous Answers!************
