Scores....

Remember we are always thinking about how this influences the music, and more importantly our tastes in Muisc

Blending Style/Instrumentation

Some Artists like to bend the rules, and stretch the boundaries of those conventional set of traditions that define a Genre.

The Beatles loved to blend Classical Elements and Instrumentation into their music , Which has a definite Rock/Pop Genre

Can you pick out the "Classical" Instrumentation in these Examples?

Penny Lane        Eleanor Rigby     All You Need is Love

Song Map

'Song Map' is a term (made up by me.....not a legit term) used to describe a visual representation of a song.
We could do a song map for things like Lyrics/Form (verse, chorus, hook etc).
Today we will be mapping out
Instrumentation and Texture.

What we are Trying to Determine:
What Instruments are Used
Of course for most songs there are more than one instrument used.  Depending on Genre, Style, Nationality etc. There could be a wide array of instruments. We will get a comprehensive list of all instruments used at any time in the song.

Where/When the instruments are Used:
Even though there are multiple instruments used in a song, they aren't ALL being used ALL the time... Where and When are they used? We will Provide specific time stamps where there are changes

Where Are the Texture Changes?
Songs are rarely the same texture all the way throughout - generally it will change (like instrumentation - many times with it).  The map will tell us where/when and give is a visual representation of it.
Steps:
1. What Instrumentation does it start with
2. Take a listen just to survey
3. Stop each time we hear change in texture/instrumentation - take time-stamp
4. Listen to song before/after time-stamp, and record the change in  instrumentation
5. Where is the Thickest/ Thinnest Texture

 Let it Be
Hey Jude (start at :50)
Fix You
A Day in the Life

Song Map Assignment

Your assignment is to create a Song-Map (like we just did in class) of the instrumentation and texture of  2 songs.  The songs will be your choice but one song must use the 'build-up' technique like seen in "Fix You."
Try to find the most dramatic and best build up possible!

Your Assignment Should Include (for each song):

1. Song Name / Artist
2. Visual Representation of instrumentation/texture WITH time-stamps
3.List of all instruments
4. Label Thickest and Thinnest Sections
****5. Show where the build-up is!****
***only for build-up selection****

REMEMBER  -  You can always use research to help you find things
(like double checking instrumentation, or even finding a song with a buildup - when in doubt google it!)
