Intro to Judging Music

Things to think about when judging music....

What questions are we trying to answer when judging a song?

Possible Questions:
  •   "Is this a good song?"
  •   " Do I like this song?"
If we are going to ask these questions, we must get a better idea of what we mean by "Like" and "Good"

These terms are really very VAGUE ......  Lets think about some other things we judge on a regular basis

Movies:
  • If we are trying to decide whether or not we "Like" a movie, there are many factors that go into that decision
    • WHAT do we like about it?
      • the actors/actresses, the storyline, the set, The lines, the special effects?
  • If we are trying to decide whether or not movie is good , there are also many factors that go into this
    • WHAT is it "good" for and WHY is it "good"?
      • Is it good for:  watching with friends? alone? with family? a date?
      • is it good because: it makes you laugh? it makes you excited?
Food:
  • If we are trying to decide whether or not we "Like" a movie, there are many factors that go into that decision
    • WHAT do we like about it?
      • the taste? how it looks? how it smells?
        • food is unique because of course it is implied that we are referring to how it tastes
    • If we are trying to decide whether or not movie is good , there are also many factors that go into this
      • WHAT is it "good" for and WHY is it "good"?
        • Is it good for: breakfast? lunch? dinner? snack?

So really what we are asking about MUSIC is;

--------    What is it good For   -------

Remember we should think about USING music as a SKILL
Music has USES and ACTIVITIES it is useful for accompanying

Is it good for:
Working out?
Eating dinner?
Falling Asleep?

--------       What do we like about it        ---------

Exactly what aspects or characteristics of the song do we like or dislike?

Do we like:
The Artist?
The message of the song?
the actual lyrics?
The Instruments?

So we are trying to create a CRITERIA for judgement

This will help us describe HOW we judge
