Week 14

Objectives:

Final Project #1
Assignments:

Final Project #1 Due Today at 3:00!!!

Final Project #1

For this project, you will create a song based on a very specific set of guidelines.

These Guidelines will pertain to things like:  Genre, Style, Instrumentation, Form, ETC.

Essentially, this is one step away from actually Transcribing a song ( think about to week 2 with 'So Fresh So Clean') :
The difference is  When transcribing, our guidelines would be defined by the original song we are trying to re-create

**** This is different from other projects we have done, where I usually give you specific Guidelines in one of these areas , but you have creative freedom in others:
For Example:  Specific guidelines pertainig to form, but freedom in the other areas like genre******

The point of this project is not to measure your creativity, rather to measure your ability to follow instructions and
create a project adhering to a set of rules!

Therefore you will be Graded on your accuracy!

If we think of a real life situation for a Sound Engineer, you are much more likely to have to adhere to the creative wishes of the artist you are helping, rather than having your own creative liberty!
This is not a reflection of your musical skill - i.e. it doesn't mean you aren't creative - but it is your roll as an engineer to facilitate what the artist is tryng to achieve

SO - Imagine that you are working with an artist, and the artist / or producer and this person emails youa list with the requirments for their project -  your paycheck depends on the accuracy and giving them what they want!

*** one place this project could happen in real life is if you were trying to create music to commercial***

Project Requirments

Things to Remember

Genre:    Punk Rock

Bassline  :   Sustained

Harmony Chord Progression:

 1        4        5        4
I       IV        V         IV
C        F         G         F

Form :
Should Include:
Intro, Verses,  Chorus' , and an Outro

Bonus:
  • Add a Bridge Section
  • Write out your Chorus and Verse melodies in Notation
Genre:
Genre will determine things like Instrumentation and Tempo.  Both these things should be appropriate according to your genre (ex. you should not use a synth lead in a Folk song /  your punk rock tune should not be SLOW)

BassLine :
Remember that a sustained baseline is 1 note per Chord -  but you can alter it rhythmically by pulsing on the beat -  Like the Punk Rock Bassline.

Harmony:
C Chord

F Chord

G Chord

Form :
  • Your song must start with an intro and end with an outro, but what you put in those is up to you.
  •  You may use any combination of Verse/chorus but your song must not exceed 2 Minutes (switch to TIME on the upper control panal bar to check).
  • Remember that your Verse and Chorus should sound distinctly different so that we can hear when a new section comes in .  Achieve this with a change in texture/instrumentation/drum groove/bass line etc.
  • All sections must be either 4 or 8 measures!

MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 3 PM TODAY!  PRETEND YOU ARE ON A REAL TIME FRAME!!

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT GRADED ON CREATIVITY AND COMPLEXITY, SO YOU SHOULD PLAN YOUR SONG BASED ON BEING ABLE TO GET IT DONE!

Grading:

A   -    Followed all Rules/Fullfilled all the requirments
B   -    Broke one Rule/Missed one requirment
C  -  Missed / Disregarded Multiple  Rules
D  -   Disregarded all Rules
